I said one thing to my sister last year while we dominated the crap out of the Southeast Division (not that it was difficult, there's not a whole lot of real competition): "I would rather be the team that beats adversity, than win by rolling over everyone." You can ask her if I said it.
Last year was the best regular season the Washington Capitals had ever seen, and look at how it served us in the playoffs. A big pile of nothing. It was almost mocking how we fell last year, and I admit, I was among the many who were dissappointed. Who wants to lose like that?
But the Capitals have become extremely popular in the last three years, and what many newer fans (whom I welcome, but would like to slap the shit out of sometimes) don't yet understand is that a 6 game losing streak in December is not the end of the world. Until the day comes where we are once again sitting in that lonely spot now held by the Florida Panthers at the bottom of the Southeast Totem Pole (and until recently, it was typically kept warm by us) I will not discredit that this team can bounce back. Because I know they can.
We were extremely cocky last year, and this is again a great humbling experience for the boys in Red. Once April rolls around, and December is put behind us, or more importantly forgotten, and we put Round 1 of the playoffs behind us and move on to Round Two, and Three..and by God, Four, there won't be a single soul saying "Oh My God, Remember December? How Horrible THAT was. They'll be saying "2011 Stanley Cup Champs!! YEAH!" And all the little fans who ditched us this week will be back, saying "I knew they'd win all along!"
